You don't have to have seen a meteorite crashing to know what it looks like—there are plenty of photographs, videos, and even some great accurate depictions in movies and TV. But do you know how it sounds? A Ring camera installed at a home in Prince Edward Island, Canada, caught both video and audio of a meteorite's crash. And according to experts, it's likely the first time this sound has ever been recorded.

A man named Joe Velaidum had the honor of being the first person to record this sound with his security camera. He had just left his home to take his dog for a walk when he heard a loud boom, and had he lingered a little longer, this scientific breakthrough may have had a more tragic ending, as the meteor landed right on his walkway.

“The shocking thing for me is that I was standing right there a couple of minutes right before this impact,” Velaidum told CBC News. “If I'd have seen it, I probably would've been standing right there, so it probably would've ripped me in half.”

While checking the debris, Veladium's father-in-law, who lives nearby and heard the bang too, thought it was a meteor, but they were both skeptical. Once they saw the footage, it became clearer—something had fallen from above with tremendous speed and strength. To be sure, they reached out to meteor specialist Chris Herd .

“It's not anything we've ever heard before. From a science perspective, it's new,” Herd,  University of Alberta's meteorite collection curator, shared with CBC News: Compass. “The meteorite itself we've been able to investigate since then, thanks to the owners.” Velaidum sent some samples to Herd, who confirmed it was a meteorite. Particularly, it was an ordinary chondrite, the most common type of meteorite to crash on Earth. According to him, the rock was traveling at least 124 km/h (about 77 mph) when it hit Velaidum's driveway.

The meteor is now known as the Charlottetown Meteorite, named after the capital city of Prince Edward Island. Coincidentally, Herd had a trip planned to the area, and was able to visit Veladium's home and measure the divot, which was about an inch long. “It's really awesome. It's actually the first and only meteorite ever found on the Island, and what a way to make that discovery,” Herd says. “Every time that this happens, it's a new sample from space. It's from the asteroid belt… between Mars and Jupiter, so it's come a long way.”

This is likely the first time the sound of a meteorite crashing on Earth has ever been recorded, according to experts.

The footage was recorded by Joe Velaidum's Ring camera. The man had just left his home when the meteorite hit his walkway.

Musician Dave Grohl, frontman of Foo Fighters, recently turned 56. But rather than throw a big bash, the singer opted to spend his birthday helping others. The long-time LA resident joined the horde of volunteers who have devoted their time to wildfire relief, and was seen cooking meals for the non-profit organization Feed the Streets LA.

In a a pair of Instagram stories posted by Feed the Streets LA, Grohl can be seen stirring up a large pot of chili and pushing black food containers down a sidewalk. The latter clip is accompanied by the caption, “Making breakfast and lunch for tomorrow. Distributing dinner tonight for displaced families and inmate firefighters.”

This isn't the first time Grohl has volunteered in this type of way. In March 2023, he helped prepare thousands of meals for people experiencing homelessness. “On one of those wet and cold rainy days we received a text from none other than Dave Grohl (code name: Dolce & Gabana)—he said he heard about what we were doing and wanted to help out,” Feed the Streets LA recounts.

“We threw him into an upcoming activation. He spent 18 hours straight smoking brisket, ribs and pork—with a cooking crew,” the organization explained. “They stayed up all night and into the sunrise. The next day Dolce and his team, exhausted and sleep deprived—packed up the food and drove it to MacArthur Park. All they had to do was drop it off and leave, however they decided to stay and work the line—serve the BBQ with our crew until everyone at the park was fed. If that ain’t a hero we don’t know wtf is.”

According to Feed the Streets, they launched over 75 fire relief food activations since January. “FTS was born out of gratitude for freedom and life—two simple things most people take for granted,” the organization writes, reflecting on the work done by people like Grohl. “The communities that allow us to be of service are the corner stones of the movement. See ya in the streets.”

You can find more information about donating and volunteering by visiting Feed The Street's website. You can also follow the organization on Instagram.

Dogs are incredibly smart creatures, especially when it comes to matters of life and death. A mom dog recently caught on video in Turkey is the perfect example of this. The pooch was seen carrying her hypothermic puppy in her mouth to bring it to the Beylikduzu Alfa Veterinary Clinic in Istanbul, where the little dog was immediately treated by doctors in order to save its life.

It all started when a good samaritan spotted a lonely and sick pooch, which happened to be one of the mom dog's pups. As though she was fully aware that little doggies could get help at the vet, she grabbed her other pup, which was hypothermic, and carried it to the veterinarian's doorstep.

“Yesterday was a day when the saying ‘Living is a hope' came to life,” the veterinarian team wrote on Instagram. “This beautiful mother dog asked for help from our clinic with her puppy that was about to freeze to death in its mouth… Our struggle to keep the puppy alive started when we realized that the puppy's heart was beating.”

The vets allowed the concerned mom dog to be by her puppies' side as they were treated. It is reported that the mom dog also brought in a third puppy, which sadly didn't survive. Veterinarian Baturay Oğan told The Dodo that it appears that she had given birth a few weeks before, but someone had taken her away to get her spayed, causing the puppies to become hypothermic, as mom wasn't around to keep them warm.

To keep the mom dog and her pups—the two surviving dogs from a litter of six—safe from the cold and danger, the clinic has announced that they'll take care of them. “Their health is good now,” Oğan said. “Their mother is in good condition. She is a bit weak, but we feed her intensively. The mother dog and the puppies are staying with us.”

Beylikduzu Alfa Veterinary Clinic in Istanbul works hard every day to treat pets in need of healthcare.

Though they often treat dogs, they recently saved the life of a pup and its very special mother.

Watch as the loving mom dog carries her hypothermic puppy to the clinic to save it from freezing to death.

The 1839 Awards, named after a watershed year in the history of photography, continue their mission to celebrate the ever-changing art of photography. This contest encourages photographers to push the creative limits of their practice, resulting in a wide array of images from all over the world. From the abstract and artistic to the narrative and documentary, the winners capture the boundless possibilities of this medium.

Aiming to spotlight both emerging and established photographers, the 1839 Awards are divided into Professional and Non-Professional competitions, with 15 and 14 individual categories, respectively. For the 2024 edition, the contest received entries from 60 countries, which were weighed in on by judges from world-class institutions, including the The New York Times, Getty Images, and Centre Pompidou, among others.

This time, the winner of the Professional competition was Logan White, who earned the title of International Photographer of the Year. His whimsical image, titled Hearts Content Road, Gianna, was taken in upstate New York and explores the duality of fantasy through a playful trompe l'oeil composition.

Meanwhile, photographer Matthew Portch was named International Photographer and Discovery of the Year as the winner of the Non-Professional competition—an accolade he says he is “very honored” to receive. His image, aptly titled Buried Car, CA, presents an eerie landscape that touches on places that seem frozen in time after all their residents are long gone.

“From a series of portraits of queer youth navigating their identity in a changing world to still lives that add new dimensionality to the subject, this year’s top honorees are among our most talented group of winners yet,” the 1839 Awards announces.

Tokyo's Harajuku district has long been regarded as a hub for culture and street fashion. As such, it was the perfect spot for Takashi Murakami to take over with his Louis Vuitton collaboration. To celebrate the relaunch of their colorful line, which includes a striking campaign starring Zendaya, the artist has brought his vibrant designs to a pop-up store, a coffee shop, and a railway station.

Adding a touch of color and whimsy to the daily commutes of those who call Tokyo home, Murakami covered parts of the famous JR Harajuku station with his cheerful motifs. Pictures shared by the artist on Instagram show the stairs leading from the station platform to the ticket gates transformed into a lively photo op.

The pop-up store was opened on Harajuku’s Cat Street, known for being home to many fashion retailers. The green glass façade of the venue was decorated with oversized motifs, immersing visitors in the collection before they even set foot in the pop-up. Inside, minimalist modules inspired by Japan's famous capsule hotels exhibit new pieces and archival items from the original 2003 collection.

The nearby Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton café by Coffee Zingaro rounded out the experience. The stars of the show were matcha lattes featuring latte art of Murakami’s world-famous Superflat flowers, as well as cookies and pastries featuring these designs. The coffee shop also boasts digital installations and a giant panda sculpture that welcomes visitors with a wide smile.

While Louis Vuitton has opened similar experiences in fashion hubs such as New York City and Milan, there is something special about the events in Murakami's hometown. After all, they allow a wider share of his audience to experience the charm of this monumental collaboration. If you visit Tokyo in the coming weeks, the pop-up shop and café are open until January 26, 2025.

Many are familiar with the looks and sizes of the dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth, but it may be harder to grasp that they once walked the same areas where we live and work today. The biggest dinosaur trackway in the history of the UK was recently unearthed in a quarry, featuring nearly 200 footprints in multiple paths that cross the limestone ground, forming a “dinosaur highway.”

Gary Johnson found the footprints in Oxfordshire while he was driving an excavator. “I was basically clearing the clay, and I hit a hump, and I thought it's just an abnormality in the ground, but then it got to another, 3 meters (10 feet) along, and it was a hump again. And then it went another 3 meters—hump again,” he tells BBC. Aware of previous discoveries in the area, he correctly wondered if they could be dinosaur footprints. “I thought I'm the first person to see them. And it was so surreal—a bit of a tingling moment, really.”

This led to the discovery of five trackways, unearthed by a team of over 100 scientists and volunteers from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham. The researchers made casts of the tracks and took thousands of photographs to create 3D models of the site, as well as of individual footprints. Given that a shallow lagoon covered the area, researchers believe dinosaurs left their prints as they stepped in the mud. Still, they aren't entirely sure what led to the preservation of the footprints. One theory posits that there was possibly a storm that deposited sediments on top of the footprints, which kept them from being washed away.

The footprints date back to 166 million years ago, in the Middle Jurassic Period. To the delight of the researchers, they are so well preserved they were able to determine the particular species that left them. “The preservation is so detailed that we can see how the mud was deformed as the dinosaur’s feet squelched in and out,” says Dr. Duncan Murdock, Earth Scientist at Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH), via a statement.

Two different types of dinosaurs are behind these imprints: the Cetiosaurus, a gigantic sauropod with a long neck, and the Megalosaurus, a smaller, carnivore dinosaur with distinctive, large, three-toed feet with claws. One of the most thrilling parts of the discovery is that their paths once crossed, literally. “Scientists have known about and been studying Megalosaurus for longer than any other dinosaur on Earth, and yet these recent discoveries prove there is still new evidence of these animals out there, waiting to be found,” shares Dr. Emma Nicholls, Vertebrate Paleontologist at OUMNH.

So far, five paths have been unearthed–four belonging to the Cetiosaurs and one to the Megalosaurus. The longest trackway is 492 feet long but could extend much farther as researchers continue to look into it. “This is one of the most impressive track sites I've ever seen, in terms of scale, in terms of the size of the tracks,” explains Kirsty Edgar, a micropaleontologist from the University of Birmingham. “You can step back in time and get an idea of what it would have been like, these massive creatures just roaming around, going about their own business.”

Ultimately, the discovery opens new possibilities in the world of paleontology, as it offers a different insight into the lives of these creatures. “You can learn things about how that animal moved. You can learn exactly what the environment that it was living in was like. So tracks give us a whole different set of information that you can't get from the bone fossil record,” concludes Richard Butler, a paleobiologist from the University of Birmingham. “The really lovely thing about a dinosaur footprint, particularly if you have a trackway, is that it is a snapshot in the life of the animal.”

“The really lovely thing about a dinosaur footprint, particularly if you have a trackway, is that it is a snapshot in the life of the animal,” concludes Richard Butler, a paleobiologist from the University of Birmingham.

David Lynch, the avant-garde director of films like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, as well as the paradigm-shifting TV series Twin Peaks, has died at 78. His influence transcended film, creating a uniquely dark visual narrative language that became known by fellow filmmakers, critics, and fans simply as “Lynchian.” This vision also reached his paintings, books, experiments with music and entrepreneurships.

Lynch’s death was announced by his family on Facebook. “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” they wrote. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.” While his family didn’t name a cause of death, Lynch announced in 2024 that he that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking. According to Deadline, the director recently took a turn for the worse after having to evacuate his house during the Sunset Fire. In the wake of his passing, it’s only natural to take a look back at his prolific career and the impact he has had and continues to have in film, TV, and the arts as a whole.

Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana, Lynch jumped into the movie scene in 1977 with his debut film, Eraserhead. The macabre tone and subject matter turned it into a cult film among the midnight movie circuit. His breakthrough came with The Elephant Man (1980), a dark tale about a sideshow “freak” in Victorian England. This film earned him the first of his four nominations for Best Director at the Academy Awards.

Lynch has long been renowned for his evocative, brooding creative vision, which mixed elements of surrealism with film noir and horror to create experimental narrative structures that inspired audiences to create their own meanings. There doesn’t seem to be an absolute consensus as to what is Lynch's masterpiece—experts are divided between Blue Velvet (1986), a film that challenged the façade of the American Dream of the 80s; Twin Peaks (1990), the haunting TV series that would become a cornerstone for modern prestige television; and Mulholland Drive (2001), a neo-noir mystery that explores the dangerous allure of Hollywood and which earned Lynch the Best Director award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2020, the auteur received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. A couple of years later, he made his final appearance in a film in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, where he played director John Ford. “I loved David’s films,” Spielberg said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”

Following his death, tributes started pouring in quickly. Movie theaters around the world changed their marquees in his honor, and former collaborators expressed how much Lynch had meant to them.

“It wasn’t just his art that impacted me—his wisdom, humor, and love gave me a special sense of belief in myself I’d never accessed before,” Naomi Watts, one of the stars of Mulholland Drive, wrote on Instagram. “Every moment together felt charged with a presence I’ve rarely seen or known. Probably because, yes, he seemed to live in an altered world, one that I feel beyond lucky to have been a small part of. And David invited all to glimpse into that world through his exquisite storytelling, which elevated cinema and inspired generations of filmmakers across the globe.”

Kyle MacLachlan, who appeared in so many of Lynch’s projects that he became known as his “alter-ego” or his “stand-in,” thanked him for propelling his career, and mourned his dear friend. “What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to,” the actor shared. “While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.”

NPR's Tiny Desk is a intimate concert series beloved by music fans. It offers the opportunity to listen to raw, unfiltered performances by some of the world's top musicians. This is particularly alluring when a powerful vocalist gets to play, showcasing their true abilities without any autotune or similar tech. That's why British singer-songwriter Sam Smith thrived in this format, giving a 20-minute show that many wish went on for longer.

The acoustic set was recorded in 2023, when Smith was halfway through their Gloria the Tour headlining concert tour in support of their fourth studio album, Gloria (2023). Despite being only four songs long, the setlist is a career-spanning glimpse. It starts with Smith's breakthrough ballad “Stay With Me,” followed by dance pop hit “How Do You Sleep,” a duet with LaDonna Harley-Peters in “Lay Me Down,” and “Unholy,” a provocative track that earned Smith their latest Grammy.

Smith, who has been in the big leagues of pop music for about a decade, has already won some of the biggest accolades in the industry. They have five Grammy Awards–Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour (2014), Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Stay With Me,” and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance alongside Kim Petras for “Unholy” in 2023. With this, they are the first openly non-binary musician to win a Grammy Award. Smith also has a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for “Writing's on the Wall,” the theme for the James Bond film Spectre (2015).

The singer has long been lauded for their tremendous vocal range, which ranges from baritone to tenor. This gift is complemented by their profoundly personal songs in a wide range of styles. Smith is no stranger to carrying their heart on their sleeve, showing equal vulnerability when writing about a broken heart with a soaring ballad or openly celebrating their desires with a floor-filling tune.

Take a dive into Smith's musical prowess and revisit their chart-topping hits by watching their NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

Humans are not the only ones affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles—thousands of animals, both wild and domestic, have been devastated as well. Many pets have become separated from their families or need a place to stay while their humans get back on their feet. To help free space in local shelters around the LA area, organizations around the country are taking in adoptable animals from Southern California.

Wings of Rescue, a California-based nonprofit organization, has flown dozens of pets to other states, such as Utah and Washington. Created in 2009, the team has devoted itself to saving dogs from high-kill shelters by taking them to regions with less animals waiting to be adopted. This time, however, their mission was slightly different. “By transporting pets who have been waiting for adoption to partners with open kennel space, we’re creating room for evacuees’ pets, medical cases, and those who need to be reunited with their families,” they wrote on Instagram.

One of the places that is taking these pets in is Seattle Humane in Bellevue. “To come here and see all them come off the runway, it means a lot,” Jacob Beardsley, a shelter care supervisor at Seattle Humane, told KUOW as the animals were being unloaded from the plane. “We just have a lot of dedicated staff that are really itching to get their hands on these dogs and give them all the care that they need.”

After being examined and making sure they are up to date on all of their vaccines, the furry friends will be available for adoption. “This is a hot spot for adoption,” adds Gene Gable of Wings of Rescue. “Animals don’t stay in shelters long in Seattle.” This isn't the first time the Seattle area has taken in adoptable animals following an emergency, as they also brought animals in shelters affected by the Maui fires in 2023.

Meanwhile, Best Friends Animal Society, self-described as the largest no-kill sanctuary in the U.S., announced the arrival of 58 cats and 26 dogs in Utah, and were bound for their shelter in Kanab. “After their multi-state travel day, all babies are now getting tucked in for the night at our Sanctuary after having a nice meal and lots of love and snuggles from our caregivers,” they shared.

Looking to help even more animals, Best Friends Animal Society found a way to maximize the space available in shelters across Utah with the aim to bring in even more pets. They also started introducing local families to the animals flown from California, resulting in some of the first adoptions for these pets. This was the case for Stella, a husky pulled from Pasadena who has found her forever home with a loving family in Salt Lake City.

If you want to support their mission, you can visit the social media channels of Wings of Rescue, which still has some flights scheduled to further evacuate pets from LA, and Seattle Humane and Best Friends Animal Society.

Many of us learn the names and order of all the planets in our Solar System from a very young age, though it's uncommon to witness them all at once (or perhaps ever) in the night sky. Most of the time we only get to see one or two at a time—such as Venus, regularly the brightest planet in the sky. However, a rare upcoming event will soon allow us to see seven planets in the sky at the same time for one night only.

On February 28, 2025, Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars will all come together in a planetary event for the ages. We'll get to see all planets at the same time thanks to them being on the same side of the Sun simultaneously, something that doesn't occur often, particularly for these many planets at once.

While these events are known as alignments, it has more to do with all planets being together in the night sky rather than them literally aligning. After all, planets always appear on a line in the sky. This is known as the ecliptic, the plane in which all planets orbit around the Sun. The ecliptic also explains why planets seem to be so close to each other in the night sky despite being millions of miles away from one another. They also never form a neat straight line either, as some of their orbits are tilted a little above or below this plane.

That's not the only exciting planetary alignment coming up though. Before that, on January 21, all planets except Mercury will be shining at the same time. Mars, Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter will be visible to the naked eye, but you'll need powerful binoculars or a telescope to see Neptune and Uranus. Also, make sure to find yourself in a location free from tall buildings or high mountains, as they may cover the planets that are the lowest in the sky, such as Venus and Saturn, depending on your vantage point.

Even if you were to look up during a random night in January, you'd still encounter a very exciting sight—four planets shining brightly in the sky at the same time. NASA has said that while multi-planet viewing opportunities (like the four planets being viewable at the same time) aren’t super rare, they don’t happen every year, so it’s worth checking them out. That's why, even if you miss out on the larger alignments, you'll still have other opportunities see something amazing.

To stay up to date with more amazing astronomical events, make sure to visit NASA's website.
